Memory contract prices move before the word upcycle appears

By the time memory makers describe an upcycle on their earnings calls, contract prices have usually been rising for a while. The prices are the cycle. The word is a lagging indicator.

Delayed

Why prices lead

Memory is sold on contracts that reset regularly, alongside a spot market that trades continuously. Spot moves first, contract prices follow, and reported revenue follows contract prices with a lag. Management commentary arrives last, once the numbers make it safe to say.

That sequence means the best information is in the price series, not in the narrative around it.

What I'm watching

  • Spot prices against contract prices, since spot above contract usually precedes contract increases
  • Inventory at the memory makers
  • Capital spending announcements, which eventually end the upturn

Where I stand

Long. The price series turned before the commentary did, and the earnings have not caught up with the prices yet.

What would change my mind

Spot prices falling below contract prices again. That is the early sign that the turn is losing momentum, and it shows up well before revenue does.

The second point is the one most people are going to skip over.

Clearest framing of MU I've read this month.

Nora Aziz·

Are you expressing this in equity or options?

Kenji Aoyama·

Equity for now. I'll look at options if the vol comes in.

Mei Vasquez·

For anyone tracking this, the data drops Thursday pre-market.

Reasonable thesis but I think MU is priced for most of this already.
