A flat volatility curve says the market has stopped relaxing

The VIX futures curve usually slopes upward: markets feel calm about the next month and less sure about the months after. When the curve flattens, near-term worry has caught up with the long-run kind, and the market has stopped relaxing.

What the shape says

An upward-sloping curve is the normal state, and it is what makes volatility products decay over time. A flat curve means traders are paying almost as much for protection next month as for protection later. That usually reflects a known event ahead, or a broader unease that has not yet become a sell-off.

A fully inverted curve is the stress signal. Flat sits in between, and it is worth watching precisely because it is unresolved.

What I'm watching

  • The gap between the front two futures months
  • The VIX against realised volatility on the index
  • Put demand around upcoming events

Where I stand

Watching. A flat curve is a warning light, not a verdict, and it resolves in either direction.

What would change my mind

The curve steepening again as the event passes. That is the market relaxing, and the warning light going back off.

Saved. The watch-list section alone is worth it.

For anyone tracking this, the data drops Thursday pre-market.

What's the invalidation level you're using on VIX?

Equity for now. I'll look at options if the vol comes in.

Not sure I buy the timing here. Feels like this needs another quarter of data before it's actionable.
